The proposed acquisition of Massmart by Walmart will require extensive spatial information to assist
in investment decisions for both South African and African markets. In the South Africa, knowing the size, location and consumer characteristics of the market in relation to the existing coverage of Massmart stores as well as competitor chains will be required to fully understanding the value of the acquisition. This will form the basis for further decision making as to the expansion potential in the South African market.
To get a 'bigger footprint in Africa' will require an understanding of the potential of countries across the continent. Information on economic potential and growth, population characteristics and consumer patterns is needed to prioritize the African countries where Walmart will want to expand. Similarly, spatial information on existing retail stores as well as the distribution of the population at a local level will be required to fully understand the potential of these markets. This in combination with approaches that optimize the location of new stores will be required.
AfricaScope with its extensive knowledge of the African market at a continental and sub-national level as well as its ability to source critical spatial information through national partners could be a strategc partner of Walmart. AfricaScope also specializes in sourcing national census data for countries, updating demograpghics on an annual basis and developing datasets on consumer patterns that is needed to optimize the location of new stores within countries. AfricaScope as mapped the location of all Massmart stores in South Africa and through its partnerships can access similar information on the retail sector in other African countries.
