AfricaScope will systematically capture the spatial location of all retail outlets in South Africa and update them on an annual basis. Using existing lists of retail outlets and innovative methods, AfricaScope is able to quickly and efficiently capture the location of retail outlets across South Africa and in Africa. Attribute information is also collected, including contact details, size, footcount and developers (where available). Through the developers and retail companies themselves, information will be obtained on retail outlets that are presently being developed and where new ones are being planned.
This information will be date stamped to show the expansion and contraction of shopping centres and retail outlets on an annual basis. With its extensive demographic, LSM, crime and economic data, profiles of retail outlets can be easily produced. A key reason why AfricaScope is capturing this information is to assist retail companies to identify the optimum location of new shopping centres and retail outlets. AfricaScope uses accessibility modelling techniques to do this that takes into account existing and future markets, where shopping centres and retail outlets are presently located, where their competitors are situated and where new developments are happening.
