Projects

AfricaScope is working with a number of clients and partners on projects in South Africa and several African countries.

Financial/Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises

  • Financial Sector Deepening Trust (FSDT): AfricaScope is currently advising the FSDT in Tanzania in the implementation of national financial and MSME surveys.

Surveys

  • Royal Bafokeng Nation: In 2012 AfricaScope conducted a Population and Use of Land Audit (PULA) and a socio-economic and health survey for the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN). PULA involved mapping every structure and then conducting a census of every household in the nation. The survey was conducted among 650 households where detailed information on the socio-economic status and health of households was collected. Athropometric measurements and HIV prevalence testing was done on qualifying individuals.  
  • World Bank: Members of AfricaScope are advising the World Bank in the implementation of Citizen Report Cards in Ghana and Sierra Leone. The Citizen Report Cards focus on service delivery in Accra, Ghana and the fisheries industries in Ghana and Sierra Leone. The focus of the project is to establish the sample frame, undertake the sample design and weighting, overseeing the field work, doing the analysis and report writing as well as mapping the survey data.
  • Maputo City Council: Africascope advised MCC in the implementation of a Citizen Report Card
  • Ask Afrika: Africascope assisted Ask Afrika in the production of fieldwork maps for several projects including FinScope 2011 and Media24.

Spatial Information

  • AfricaScope has added a comprehensive suite of new spatial datasets to its catalogue including:
    • demographic and language estimates at an enumeration area lebel for 2010
    • poverty estimates at a municipality level for 2007-2010
    • Gross Dometic Product (GDP) at a municipality level for 2001-2010
    • employment statistics at a municipality level for 2007-2009
    • commercial, industrial and mining zones in 2010
    • estimates of the daytime population for metropolitan areas in 2010
    • disposable income at a municipality level in 2010
    • Living Standard Measures (LSM) data was generated at an enumeration area level for 2010
    • the crime statistics at a police station level were updated to 2010
  • Data sales: The following government departments, parastatals and private corportations purchased datasets from AfricaScope and its partners:

    • Markinor
    • TNS Research Surveys
    • SA MultiLoan
    • First National Bank 
  • SA MultiLoan: AfricaScope assisted SA MultiLoan in developing a new branch locator tool. The tool takes supply and demand factors into consideration in optimally locating new potential branches
  • Mitsubishi: Maps showing the Primary Marketing Areas (PMAs) for Mitsubishi were produced.
  • Nissan SA: Working with WMB Solutions, AfricaScope identified the optimum location of new dealerships in Gauteng.
  • Iveco: A geomarketing tool was developed for Iveco that showed the location of dealerships, Dealer Areas of Responsibility (DAR) and volume sales data at a licensing district and DAR level for southern Africa.
  • Econometrix: AfricaScope provided maps and data for two projects conducted by Econometrix in cape Town and Limpopo province
