Knowing who is banked, what products they are using and who they are banking with is critical information needed in the banking industry to make strategic decisions about what products to offer and where to place their branches and ATMs. This information can be accessed and mapped from the FinScope surveys that are implemented in many African countries. Information on insurance penetration and the concentration of micro, small and medium enterprises can also be accessed. AfricaScope works with various agencies in facilitating access to this information. |

Living Standard Measures (LSM) |
Knowing where your market is located is foundational to future strategic development. The LSM (Living Standard Measure) is the industry standard when it comes to looking at consumer patterns in South Africa. Over the years the LSM developed by the South African Advertising Research Forum (SAARF) has changed in the household assets contained in it and the number of categories. AfricaScope through partnerships with key agencies has been able to source nationally representative survey data that it has modelled to provides LSMs at a local level. |

Retail stores |
AfricaScope will systematically capture the spatial location of all retail outlets in South Africa and update them on an annual basis. Using existing lists of retail outlets and innovative methods, AfricaScope is able to quickly and efficiently capture the location of retail outlets across South Africa and in Africa. Attribute information is also collected, including contact details, size, footcount and developers (where available). |
|
Shopping centres |
Maps showing the location of shopping centres are required to look at where retail stores are and could be located and in identifying the optimal location of new shopping centres of different sizes. It is only once you have this information that accessibility studies can be done to determine the market share of shopping centres and the average travel times that shoppers travel to get there. AfricaScope has used various sources to provide a comprehensive picture of where shopping centres of different sizes are located. |
