Want up-to-date demographic estimates for South Africa at a local level?
Since 2004 AfricaScope has been updating the demographic estimates for South Africa annually at a local level. To accomplish this AfricaScope uses a combination of statistical methods and satellite imagery analysis. Once census data for African countries become available we will use the methods to update the demographic estimates for African countries.
This product provides demographic, economic, employment and poverty statistics at various spatial levels. Demographic data includes total population, total households, total dwellings by type, age, gender and population group figures for 2008 and 2009. The database also provides indications of how the population and dwellings have changed from over the years starting in 1991 and including 1996, 2001, 2004-2008. These statistics are updated on an annual basis.
Economic statistics show Gross Geographic Product (GGP) data at a municipality level, including statistics by sector. Employment information from censuses and national household surveys are used to provide estimates of employment at a municipal and lower level. Various poverty indicators are provided including poverty gap (depth of poverty), poverty rate (percentage households below the poverty line) and Gini Coefficient (income inequality).
