  • AfricaScope answering Zuma's triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality

President Jacob Zuma at the ANC's 100 year celebrations identified unemployment, poverty and inequality as the three greatest issues needing South Africa's attention. According to a BizCommunity press release he was also quoted as saying that "as we move into the future, we shall invest hugely in, and elevate the importance of theoretical and ideological work, as well as a scientific approach to analysing and solving society's problems." This is in essence what AfricaScope has done and will continue to do.

  • Current population estimates foundational in Africa's development

In the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) the leaders of the continent have agreed that for the future development of Africa there is a need for:

  • Spatial information crucial to Walmart purchase of MassMart

The proposed acquisition of Massmart by Walmart will require extensive spatial information to assist Dion Wired stores in South Africa: mapin investment decisions for both South African and African markets.

  • Vulnerability in Africa

Africa needs to develop a vulnerability map of disasters similar to the one pulishedby the US Geological Survey for Latin America and the Caribbean. Climate and food security vulnerability are factors that are commonly referred to in Africa but not specifically vulnerability to disasters. The document below provides a good example of how this can be done for a continent like Africa. What would be nice to see is the development of these maps by African agencies.

  • SAFA needs to locate soccer facilities closer to the youth

Aerial view of Soccer City, Soweto, Gauteng, South AfricaWhen I heard that FIFA had allocated R0.5 billion to SAFA for soccer development in South Africa, my spatial mind went into gear.

  • Knowledge on poverty not been used

It was interesting to hear recent debates on poverty and how political parties would address it.

  • Safety and security structures not being held accountable

The media is full of news items and comments about the crime situation in South Africa and the poor service delivery by the different safety and security structures.  This includes the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metropolitan Police, traffic police and even the private security companies.
